PENJING
My interest in the art of plants in a container was reborn in 2006 when I joined the Minnesota Bonsai Society.
There I acquired my first bonsai, a golden gate ficus which I won for one dollar in a raffle.  This bonsai evolved into my first 'Tree and Land'
penjing.  Through activities within MBS my knowledge and skill of the art has steadily improved so that I'm now eager to show my work.

Ficus nerifolia by kdgoebel
This shohin ficus nerifolia started out as a trunk cutting, no roots and no
leaves.  Potted in acidic rooting soil, it quickly rooted and refoliated in a
couple of months in my outdoor greenhouse.  It was transplanted recently
into this Charles Iker cresent pot using tropical soil.

Tree height 14 cm. (5.5 in.)  Trunk diameter at base 2.5 cm. (1 in.)

Gollum jade by kdgoebel
Often I'm asked how long I've been active in bonsai, and in a lot of
words my answer always describes a 'bonsai tree of learning' and
where I am on that tree.  So I hand-sketched this imagined tree.
Where am I on the tree?  Answer at bottom of picture frame.
